Message from Our President

Important Message from our President, Mike McCorkle:

First of all I want to say how glad I am that we are able to be back on the ballfield again.  I’m also very encouraged by all the ones that have stuck it out through all the delays, coronavirus, vacations, etc.  It would have been very easy just say we’re going to skip this season and try again next year.  As vacations begin to ramp up I wanted to remind everyone to stay safe and be smart when on vacation.  Although I believe some of the things coming from the media now are overhyped, the coronavirus is still out there.  Although it doesn’t seem to be too dangerous to most aged 50 and below, it’s still out there and is very dangerous to the elderly and those with pre-existing respiratory and immunity problems.  Remember when you get back you and your son may be exposed, somewhat closely at times, to others during games and practices.  First of all I don’t want any high risk individuals like grandparents or others with immune problems to possibly be exposed, as it could be very dangerous to them.  We also have to think about the umpires, some of them may be high risk.   Second, we are the only league within 100 miles playing right now and we may possibly be under a lot of scrutiny.  If someone in our league tests positive, we may have to shut down a team or division for a couple weeks.  If we’re going to be made an example of I want it to be good, not bad.  Honestly, I don’t want to have to deal with the ramifications a positive test in our league could bring.  Please avoid prolonged periods of time in crowds while on vacation.  Prolonged exposure of 5 minutes or more with someone with coronavirus is a prime way to get it.  If anyone has a temperature above 100.4 or has a cough or other known symptoms please don’t come to practice or games until it goes away.  If anyone in your household is required to be tested for coronavirus then please wait until a negative result before allowing your son to practice or play games.  Please tell your kids to avoid as much as possible close contact with others, I know it’s unavoidable but it can be reduced.  If you have a known exposure to coronavirus, please wait 14 days before coming to practice or games. Spectators should stay within family groups and the groups should be 10’ apart.   Let’s remember that we still shouldn’t quite do things like normal but we still can play baseball, we just have to be a little more cautious.  Again, please be safe while on vacation and keep in mind that you’ll be returning back to baseball when you get back.

A Message from our President:

First of all I wanted to thank everyone for their patience, we are blessed to have a great group of parents.  We are waiting until Virginia is in Phase 2 of the reopening plan before resuming practice which could happen as early as next Friday.  Phase 2 says that groups can be 50 or less which should mean we can practice and play games, but the Governor could do something different.  Be assured that when we do start that it will be safe to do so and we will take a few common sense precautions and we will follow any state guidelines.  We will start games no later than the week of June 22.  If state regulations don’t allow to start by that week then we will have to offer refunds and do something different since the next week is the 4th of July week and that wouldn’t leave us time to play many games before football starts. In that scenario we will do clinics and some “sandlot” play for those that wanted to throughout the summer.  But we are optimistic that we will be able to play a regular season.   IF YOU HAVE DECIDED YOUR SON CAN’T OR WON’T PLAY THEN WE NEED TO KNOW BY THIS FRIDAY MAY 22.  PLEASE LET US OR YOUR COACH KNOW.  We don’t want to find out when practice resumes that we don’t have enough to play.  We are currently filling open spots for the few that have dropped out.  Here’s what we have available:  We can add 8 coach pitch players, 1 AAA (9-10 year old) player, and 5 Ozone players.  If you know anyone let them know.  Again thank you for being patient as we try to figure out how to get these kids playing again.

UPDATE FOR AGES 9-15

I don’t know about everyone else but I’m ready for some baseball.  Hang in there we’re getting closer.  Right now here is where we stand.  Recreational businesses are not allowed to open until Friday.  There is a stay at home order and ban on groups over 10 until June 11.  The Virginia Dixie Youth board has said that we can start the season June 11.  Our plan is to resume practice June 11.  We will start games June 22 and play 2 games a week until August 8.  I am meeting with other league representatives on Wednesday to discuss what we’ll do about all stars/postseason play but our commitment is to have a regular season so that all kids can have the enjoyment of playing again and won’t miss a year of development.  All of this is based on the Governor lifting the stay at home order and ban on groups of more than 10 on June 10.  If this gets extended we will have to change again but pushing further back would start getting into fall sports and we understand there are some that will be dropping off to play fall sports so we will do everything we can to get the season in before fall sports start, in that case we would probably issue refunds and hold a new registration.  Hopefully our current plan holds, it depends on what our state officials do.  Our insurance company has suggested we get parents to sign COVID-19 liability waivers so I just wanted to let you know now that we will be getting everyone to sign one in order to play.

We are aware of summer vacations and know that some may miss games for vacations so we want to do everything possible to keep our teams at 12 players so teams will have enough to play while some are away for vacations. Please let us know if you have decided your child won’t play this season due to continued fears of the virus or other reasons so we can reopen registration to make sure we have 12 players on each team.  We are reopening our 7-8 year old (coach pitch)  division registration since as of now each team stands at 10 players.  Please let us know if you know of someone who has decided they want to play.
Thank you for your continued patience in all of this and please know that we are doing everything we can to start playing again and will do everything we can to make sure the kids stay safe while playing.  Please continue to pray for people to stay safe and for our government officials to make wise decisions regarding this situation.  I will update next weekend about all stars/postseason play.

2019 Spring Baseball

It is that time of year again, MDY.  Registration will begin tomorrow, 2/1 for the season.  This spring we have some exciting new changes to help our program run smoother and better serve our community.

This season, we will be partnering with the Altavista Area YMCA.  By doing this we are able to lower registration fees to $60 ($50 for Y members).  Also, in person registrations will be at the YMCA any time during regular business hours. Online registration will also be through the Y, but we will have a link to it on our website. This change is for ages 7-15, T-ball will also sign up at the Y but will be completely separate from the Motley program. The league will continue to play under Motley Dixie Youth rules and standards, but all players go into the same pool of players for even team selection.  Also new this season, each league including coach pitch will have evaluations in order to divide teams evenly. Games and practices for 7-10 year olds and 13-15 year olds will be at either Motley or the Altavista fields. All Ozone (11-12) games and practices will be at the Motley fields.  We are looking forward to this Motley Dixie Youth/Altavista YMCA baseball partnership this season!
